A cost reduction and design for manufacture project was undertaken by APD to improve the RTE8000 Travel document scanner.

Replacing many screwed together and expensive machined components with two injection moulded chassis parts allowed Rochford Thompson to substantially reduce their build time and achieve increased sales.

PCB's are now clipped into the chassis moulding and with the minimal number of fixings involved and the ease of assembly huge dividends are being made during assembly. The APD lead concept of building standard base modules for stock and fitting customer options during final assembly is working very well.

During the first 12 months of release the product was adopted by several leading governments including the US Department of Homeland Security. The scanner is indisputably in the top three of its kind in the world.
